After Extraction of Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth removal is a routine procedure performed to prevent or resolve issues such as impaction, crowding, pain, or infection. While the surgery itself is brief and minimally invasive for most patients, the post-operative period is an essential part of the healing process. At South Mississippi Oral Surgery & Implant Center in Gulfport, MS, our experienced surgical team ensures that patients are fully prepared for recovery with personalized care instructions, medications, and follow-up support.
After your surgery, it’s normal to experience swelling, mild bleeding, stiffness in the jaw, and some degree of discomfort. These symptoms are part of the healing process and typically begin to subside within 48 to 72 hours. Following our aftercare guidelines closely can dramatically improve your comfort, minimize the risk of complications, and help you return to normal activities quickly.
What Will I Feel Like After Wisdom Teeth Removal Surgery?
In the hours immediately following your procedure, you may still feel the effects of local anesthesia or IV sedation. It’s critical to have someone drive you home and monitor you during the first day. You may experience drowsiness, numbness in the lips or tongue, and a general feeling of fatigue.
Over the next few days, swelling will likely peak around day two or three, then gradually decrease. Applying ice packs to the cheeks during the first 24 hours can help control this swelling. Pain can range from mild to moderate and is usually well managed with prescribed or over-the-counter medications. We recommend staying hydrated and consuming soft, non-chewy foods such as soups, yogurts, smoothies, and mashed potatoes. Avoid straws, alcohol, carbonated beverages, and hot or spicy foods during the initial recovery period.
Rest is crucial. Avoid strenuous activity, bending over, or heavy lifting for at least 3–5 days, as these actions can disrupt blood clots and delay healing. Most patients return to school or work within a few days, depending on the complexity of their surgery and how well they’re healing.
Are There Any Problems After the Extraction of Wisdom Teeth?
Although most extractions heal smoothly, certain complications may occur. At South Mississippi Oral Surgery, we carefully monitor our patients to prevent, detect, and treat these conditions early.
Damage to Sensory Nerve:
For lower wisdom teeth, the roots are often located near the inferior alveolar nerve, which supplies feeling to the lower lip, chin, and tongue. In rare cases, this nerve may be irritated or bruised during surgery, resulting in temporary numbness or tingling. This condition—known as paresthesia—is usually short-term and resolves over weeks or months. We use state-of-the-art 3D imaging to map nerve locations pre-surgery and reduce this risk as much as possible.
Sinus Communication:
The roots of the upper wisdom teeth may be positioned close to the maxillary sinuses. Occasionally, removal can create a small passage between the sinus cavity and the mouth. When this occurs, it’s called a sinus communication. Most of these heal on their own with proper care, including avoiding blowing your nose or using straws. In the rare case that the passage doesn’t close on its own, a simple surgical repair can be performed.
Dry Sockets:
A dry socket is one of the most common complications after wisdom teeth extraction. It occurs when the protective blood clot in the socket becomes dislodged or fails to form. This exposes the bone and nerves, resulting in severe, radiating pain—usually a few days after surgery. Dry sockets are not infections, but they are painful and require attention. If you experience this condition, we can provide a medicated dressing and pain relief to promote healing.
Infection:
Although rare, infections can develop if bacteria enter the surgical site. Signs may include increased pain, swelling, a foul odor or taste, and discharge from the socket. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact our office promptly. Most infections are easily treated with antibiotics and a thorough rinse or cleaning.
